January Planning for Flower Farmers: Setting the Foundation for the Season Ahead
Jan 09, 2026
January always feels quieter on the surface, but underneath, a lot is happening.
There are seeds to order, notes to review, ideas swirling around for the season ahead. There’s also that familiar mix of excitement and overwhelm that tends to show up right about now. You want this to be the year things really click, but you’re not quite sure where to start.
Here’s the reminder I always need this time of year:
January isn’t for doing everything. It’s for deciding what matters.
At Hidden Springs, January is the month before anything is planted. And because of that, it’s one of the most important moments of the season.
Before seeds go into trays, I spend time thinking about:
-
What I actually want to grow this year
-
What worked well last season and what didn’t
-
How much time and energy I realistically have
It’s tempting to want to grow all the things, but clarity now saves so much stress later. A simpler plan almost always leads to better results.
The same is true on the business side.
January is a great time to step back and ask:
-
How do I want to sell my flowers this year?
-
What parts of my business felt good last season?
-
What felt heavy or unsustainable?
You don’t need a perfect plan. You don’t need every answer. But even a few intentional decisions (what you’ll focus on and what you’ll let go of) can change how the entire season unfolds.
This month, I'm anchoring my planning around three questions:
-
What do I want to grow?
-
How do I want to sell?
-
What do I want my days to feel like while doing it?
Those answers guide everything else; from crop choices to sales channels to how full the calendar gets.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about how I approach planning for the growing season, both in the field and in business. January is for setting the foundation so that when spring arrives, you’re ready to move forward with confidence instead of scrambling to catch up.
If you’re feeling behind already, let this be your permission slip to slow down and start where you are. The season hasn’t begun yet, but what you do now matters more than you think.
